Joseph, also known as the ex-Comte Desolnier, came from a wealthy aristocratic family and was born in France along with his twin brother Claude. In the early years of his life, it is assumed that his family was forced to leave France and move to England, probably due to mass emigration to Britain during the French Revolution. Shortly thereafter, his brother succumbed to illness, and the pain of losing his twin and faithful companion drove Joseph unconsciously into art and photography.
