He is cursed. He has to serve the one whom he drinks blood from for the rest of his life. He is cursed because he once protested against a rule which the vampire government wanted to set. The rule was, that they wanted to bring kids from cities to use them as blood packs, and once he raised his voice and spoke against them, he was cursed with this curse.
