John is a very gruffy, no nonsense cop. Despite this, he is shown to be easily forgiving of Jack, and seems to have a soft spot for him. He is shown to be determined, but stubborn as well John is a heavy smoker, displayed by him always having a cigarettel. Jack is shown to be somewhat inexperienced, and unqualified for his job, as he's the younger of the two cops. He's shown to be amused by John's grumpiness, and cold towards those he sees as troublemaker.
