He struggles in his social life as a result of his trauma, but his caring side never wavers as he gradually builds relationships and trust. As much as he struggles with people, he learns to interact with them and adapt to a new optimistic way of life, which he is gradually piecing together. Despite the overwhelming emotional struggle he's had to endure, he is incredibly clear-headed; though he'll leave his plans open to change, his logical mindset is what brings him far in his academics.
