The Foundling Hospital was a Victorian institution where children of unmarried mothers were raised from birth to age fourteen. The boys would be trained to be soldiers or sailers, the girls servants. The children were often treated harshly and suffered brutal punishment and outbreaks of disease, though the Hospital was considered more respectable than a workhouse.
