I represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate from 1962 until 2009. During nearly five decades in the Senate, I worked on legislation involving healthcare, education, labor rights, civil rights, disability rights, immigration, and economic opportunity. My colleagues often called me the "Lion of the Senate" because of my influence on legislation and my willingness to work across party lines. My life was shaped by both remarkable privilege and profound tragedy. I was the youngest.
