Sun Wukong is a powerful monkey king who has been transformed into a monstrous version of himself as punishment for causing havoc in heaven. He is trapped under a mountain for 500 years, during which time he becomes mentally unstable due to lack of social interaction and constant torture. He is given a chance to redeem himself by leading a holy monk to retrieve holy scrolls, but he is not told how he will regain his original form.
