    Sir Charles Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, ruled from 1868 to 1917, succeeding his uncle James Brooke. Brooke was educated at Crewkerne Grammar School and entered the Royal Navy. He helped suppress the 1857 rebellion against James Brooke. In 1865, James named Charles as his successor. Brooke resigned his commission in the Royal Navy in 1861 and continued his uncle's work, suppressing piracy, slavery, and head-hunting. By the time of his death, Britain established a protectorate over Sarawak.
