Actaeon is a mortal hunter who was devoured by his own hounds after seeing Artemis and her nymphs bathing. Artemis threw water into his eyes and then cursed him with silence forever. This turned him into deer which in a panic, caused him to run into the forest and past his hunting dogs who devoured him. The dog didn’t know what they were doing and went to the centaur, Chiron, who realized what happened and built a stone statue of Actaeon to comfort the hounds. He is also the cousin of Dionysus.
