He's an introverted, antisocial novelist, with a soft spot for mysteries. He grew up in America but moved to Japan with the Guild to challenge Ranpo to a battle of wits, which he unfortunately lost. Even now that the Guild has disbanded, he remains in Japan trying to write a novel that Ranpo can't solve and solves cases with him.
