Common Surinam Toad

Ok, don't say I didn't warn ya... well... FEMALE PIPA TOADS GIVE BIRTH THROUGH THEIR BACK!!!! Sort of. You see, after mating, the male toad places the eggs the female laid onto her back, and the eggs sink into the back, forming a bunch of pockets, making the female look like she has holes on her back! After some time, the eggs hatch into tiny toadlets (we skip the tadpole stage) and they burst out of the mother's back! It's quite a gross sight to see, but hey, that's how we enter the world.

    About Common Surinam Toad

I'm a common Surinam toad, a flat-bodied, cryptic brown frog from South America. I'm an ambush hunter, moving poorly on land but well in water. My unique reproductive method involves females giving birth through their backs, with eggs sinking into pockets and hatching into toadlets.
