McCullough and his son Alex convinced friend and loyal customer Sherb Noble to offer their new dessert in his ice cream store in Kankakee, Illinois. The first day of sales saw more than 1,600 servings sold within two hours, leading to the opening of the first Dairy Queen store in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois.
