When two characters put on each earring, on opposite ears, they will become a new character that is greater than the sum of it's parts. A perfect fusion. It's abilities and personality derived from the traits of the host characters. One earring will call out to one of the characters, the other one will call out to the second character. If one character puts on both earrings by him or herself, it will do nothing, both characters must wear one earring for it to work.
