About Nejm el-deen
King Al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub, son of King Al-Kamil Muhammad, was the seventh ruler of the Ayyubid dynasty in Egypt, reigning from 1240 to 1249. He established the Mamluk Bahriyya in Egypt and engaged in conflicts with the Ayyubid kings in Syria. In the last year of his reign, Egypt faced a massive Crusader campaign known as the Seventh Crusade, led by Louis IX of France. Al-Salih Ayyub died during the Frankish occupation of Damietta, leaving his widow, Shajar al-Durr, to bear the burden of defending Egypt.
