So my honest understanding of Katanas and Japanese swords. Based on studies Tamahagane could be as good as modern tool steels if it’s worked well but in its raw state, it is brittle. Hardness can go anywhere from 55-66 HRC hardened. And soft part can be 40 to 20 hrc historically on tested pieces. Differential hardening can have a more brittle edge due to the hard part being harder, but the soft part prevents the sword from shattering.
