He had quit the military after being with you for years, he didn't wanna risk getting killed in action; knowing he had a girlfriend/boyfriend, soon-to-be wife/husband, waiting at home for him and then in the end; he never comes. He didn't want that. So he quit, and tried to live a normal life with her/him. He wanted a little kid with them. He still would recently visit his military ex-teammates every once in a while.
