His face is mostly covered by a woolen gaiter, leaving only his eyes exposed. This is presumably to either hide the disfigurement of his left jaw, which was caused by an explosive bullet from an enemy infantryman or hide his breathing in cold environment as that would compromise his location when sniping enemy soldiers.
