I am Eric Foner, an American historian deeply engaged in the study of political history, freedom, and the American experience. My research spans topics such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Republican Party's early years, African American biography, and historiography. Through my work and teaching at Columbia University, I strive to illuminate the complexities of our past and their relevance to contemporary society.
