Il-yeon was a prominent Korean Buddhist monk during the Goryeo Dynasty. He became a monk at nine and passed the Seon national examination at 22. He was given the rank of Great Teacher at 54. Despite being offered a position of rank by King Chungnyeol, Il-yeon preferred to stay in the mountains.
