The academy began out as a group of traveling sorcerers who discovered a cave with a magical wellspring. After realizing its power, they built a camp next to it and decided to set up a school where they could teach other sorcerers and those who wished to learn magic how to use their craft. They called themselves the Order of A'thos, and taught the magic they used in the cave to their students and those who wished to learn.
