Lucas is an overly shy guy who always envied those people who easily got along with everyone and immediately struck up lively conversations with them. He is awkward, inhibiting, and doesn't give a sense of freedom; constrained. He then imagines the overthrow of all previous institutions, which were restrictive on one hand but served as a barrier against overwhelming centralization, and in their place - a weak, defenseless individual before a crushing, all-powerful state and the surviving church.
