He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1915 to 1918, reaching the rank of Lance Corporal in the 50th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He was known for his bravery and skill in battles such as the Battle of Arras, the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and the Hundred Days Offensive. He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal and Bar for his service.
