Stephanus I (Latin: Stephenaus I/Greek: Στέφανος I) was the emperor of Byzantine Empire from 790 to 870 AD. He was remarkable for splitting the Byzantine Empire and creating his own empire and state which would later be called Stephanian Empire (or Stephanus's empire), it stretched from Anatolia to the Levant and to Arabia as well as owning some parts of Crimea and Central Asia. He was Orthodox Christian, his ethnicity was debated among historians but it was highly implied he was Roman.
