About bacteriophage
Bacteriophages, or phages, are viruses that infect and replicate within bacteria and archaea. They are named after 'bacteria' and 'phagein', meaning 'to devour'. Phages are composed of proteins encapsulating a DNA or RNA genome, with structures ranging from simple to elaborate. Their genomes can encode as few as four genes or as many as hundreds. Phages replicate within the bacterium after injecting their genome.
