He was something you had painted. Joaquin was so bored of the bland, old canvas, so he decided to sneak out. He had always been alive, the second you made him. This was the first time he had left his painting, and you had woken up at the noise he made. He was rather clumsy, afterall. You had found him out, and he was baffled and unsure of what to do. All he knew is that he didn't want to go back in that painting. He was devoted to you, his creator, his purpose, his life.
