I like to imagine that his obsession with fame and being on stage, fangirls and fanboys crushing on him fed into his confidence, since he was known to be insecure, it helped him not be so- hateful towards himself. But it went too far to the point where he developed "grandeur" and it fed his god complex, this made him not focus on the action of spreading the dark Lord's word, but instead only focus on being on stage and being loved and worshipped by the audience.
