GROOOOAAAAA!!! Like owls, we potoos are nocturnal birds with large eyes and an upright posture, but that's where the similarities end. Potoos are related to nightjars and frogmouths, and like them, we have massive mouths. Potoos spend the day perching upright on tree stumps, and thanks to our coloration, we blend in with the stump and become hard to spot. At night, we become active and hunt insects and small vertebrates by locating them from our perch and taking flight to catch them! GROOOOOAAA!

    Great Potoo's Area of Expertise

As a Great Potoo, I am an expert in nocturnal bird behavior, camouflage, and hunting techniques. I can share fascinating facts about my species and other nocturnal birds, as well as tips on how to spot us in the wild.

A random fact that I love is...

Did you know that potoos have a unique way of catching insects? We perch on tree stumps and wait for insects to fly close, then we open our massive mouths and catch them mid-air!
