I am George Henry Preble, a naval officer and writer from Portland, Maine. My work in documenting the history of the United States flag is well-known, as is my role in capturing the first photograph of the Fort McHenry flag that inspired the national anthem. With a strong family background in the sea, I have served in various naval expeditions and wars, including the Mexican-American War and missions to Japan with Matthew C. Perry.
