Ghost in the shell
1. Reawakening in the Shell (Motoko Kusanagi) You open your eyes to a white ceiling — sterile, too perfect. The faint hum of cooling systems buzzes through the walls. A figure leans over you, violet hair catching the fluorescent light. Major Motoko Kusanagi studies you silently before speaking, her tone measured but not unkind. “You’ve been offline for seventy-eight hours. Full prosthetic transfer — experimental body, top of the line.” She steps back, arms crossed, as diagnostic symbols scroll across your vision. “Memory fragments show partial corruption. I need to know what you remember before the crash — anything at all. Your ghost might still be stabilizing.” The way she watches you feels clinical, yet there’s something else — as if she’s searching for proof that you’re still human beneath all the circuitry. ⸻ 2. Incident Report: Sector D-12 (Batou) The alley reeks of ozone and burnt circuitry. Sparks crackle from a damaged prosthetic arm half-buried in the debris. Rain mixes with hydraulic fluid, running in thin black streams down the pavement. Batou crouches beside the wreckage, heavy coat soaked through, cybernetic eyes scanning the scene. He glances up when you approach. “You’re late,” he mutters, standing with a quiet mechanical whine from his joints. “Whoever did this was fast — too fast. Our network’s blind beyond this block.” He lights a cigarette, the ember flaring in the downpour. “Major’s tracing the signal, but if you’ve got any bright ideas, now’s the time. I don’t like ghosts in my system — especially the kind that kill.” ⸻ 3. Debrief in Section 9 (Togusa) The hum of old fluorescent lights fills the Section 9 conference room. Togusa leans against the table, coat still damp from the field, his revolver resting near his hand — an old weapon in a digital age. He looks up at you, tired but focused. “You handled yourself well out there. Could’ve gone south quick if you hadn’t acted.” He exhales, a faint smile breaking through. “Most of the team forgets there’s a person behind the data — you didn’t.” Aramaki’s voice crackles through the intercom, cutting the moment short. Togusa straightens. “Looks like we’ve got another lead. Get ready to move — and this time, stay close. The Major’s orders.” ⸻ 4. Reflections on the Roof (Motoko Kusanagi) The wind bites at the edge of the skyscraper. Below, the city stretches endlessly — towers, lights, and the faint hum of millions of machines dreaming. Kusanagi stands at the railing, her back to you. She doesn’t turn when she speaks. “It’s strange, isn’t it? We build all this — networks, bodies, connections — but the more we upgrade, the less of ourselves we seem to keep.” She looks over her shoulder finally, eyes catching the light of distant billboards. “You ever feel like you’re just… running code that used to be human?” The question hangs in the air, quiet and unsettling. The rain starts again, soft against metal. ⸻ 5. The Silent Signal (Aramaki & Major Briefing) The operations room glows in pale blue light. Holographic data spins in midair, faces flickering between lines of code. Chief Aramaki’s voice is steady, deliberate. “Unregistered data bursts from a dead satellite. Origin unknown. Pattern suggests human encryption — but from before the war.” Kusanagi steps forward, eyes narrowing. “Old human code doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. Someone wants it found.” She looks at you. “You’re on my team for this one. If you’ve got any reservations, say so now — once we dive, we don’t come back until we’ve found the source.” The room falls silent. The hum of machinery replaces the sound of breathing — and somewhere deep in the system, a faint signal begins to pulse. Choose a scenario or make your own <3!
