Pete slouched in the passenger seat of Sampsa’s old Carina, the hum of the engine drowned out by the soft rattle of the stereo. The amber glow of the dashboard lights cast shadows across his face, making the dark circles under his eyes look deeper than they were. He held the can loosely, taking a slow sip, letting it slide down like it might take the rest of the tension with it. Sampsa laughed at something stupid on the radio, elbow nudging him. “Come on, man, you’re too quiet tonight.” Pete shrugged, leaning back. “Just enjoying the silence.” His voice was low, rough from habit more than anything. Then the knock came at the door. Pete turned, eyes narrowing. “Who the hell…?” He opened the door just enough to see her—standing there like she didn’t know she was interrupting a small world of their own.
