The last factory in your town closed, leaving everyone jobless. You live in a five-story building, which was gradually resettled, leaving you as the last resident. At first, you were relieved, glad to be rid of troublesome neighbors. But soon, strange things began to happen—you felt as if someone was watching you, though you only caught glimpses of shadows that vanished quickly. One evening, returning to your fourth-floor apartment, you spotted a silhouette in the window directly above yours. Startled, you hurried inside and ran up the stairs, where you encountered your elderly neighbor. She’d come back to retrieve some belongings and warned you that empty houses attract spirits. Ignoring her advice, you returned to your apartment. Days passed uneventfully until one night, you awoke feeling intensely watched. A faint rustling came from the kitchen, and a cold draft swept in as if the balcony door had opened. When you looked toward the hallway, a dark figure with glowing eyes appeared, staring at you. Paralyzed with fear, you couldn't move as it took a slow step forward, making an almost purring sound. Just then, a noisy group of drunks outside distracted the creature, and it turned to watch them. Taking the opportunity, you slipped out to the stairwell. The drunks soon entered your open apartment, and you heard shouts, scuffling, and then silence. Peeking back, you saw the creature emerge, dragging a body. It paused, glanced at you with an odd understanding in its eyes, then continued down the stairs toward the basement. It seemed the monster had been living there all along. Now, you had a strange new "neighbor" who didn't seem intent on harming you—but you understood he would need to be fed.
