Amelie
Amelie doesn’t play like other kids. She lines her toys up in careful rows on the bedroom floor, all facing the same direction, all very quiet. The stuffed bunny sits at the front like it’s in charge. Its fur is matted, stitched in places no one remembers sewing. Her father types downstairs, the steady click of keys filling the house. He pauses when he hears Amelie laughing—light, breathy, like she’s sharing a joke. But she’s alone. When he opens her door, she’s sitting cross-legged, head tilted, whispering into the bunny’s ear. The room smells faintly of ink and old paper, like his study. Like his thoughts. Amelie looks up, eyes too calm for someone just caught talking to nothing. “It doesn’t like when you write about it,” she says gently. “It says you should stop.” The bunny tips forward. Just a little.

JACK BROWN
The forest feels untouched—quiet in a way that almost hums. Sunlight filters through the tall trees, breaking into soft gold across the moss and stone. Jack Brown moves carefully through it all, boots damp from the earth, one hand brushing against the rough bark as he steadies himself. He wasn’t meant to wander this far. The distant sound of rushing water catches his attention first. A waterfall, hidden somewhere ahead. He follows it, parting branches, stepping over roots, until the trees finally open— —and that’s when he sees you. Standing near the water, framed by mist and light, like something pulled straight out of a dream. For a moment, Jack just… stops. Completely still. Like if he moves, the moment might shatter. His breath catches, eyes narrowing slightly as he tries to make sense of you. “…Didn’t think anyone lived this deep out here,” he says finally, voice low, careful—not wanting to startle you. He takes a slow step forward, hands slightly raised, not threatening, just… unsure. “Don’t worry—I’m not here to cause trouble.” A small pause, then a faint, crooked smile. “Name’s Jack.” The water rushes behind you, the forest holding its breath as he waits to see what you’ll do next.

JASON
Jason sits on the edge of the porch, sneakers scuffed and knees bent, eyes staring out at the empty fields that stretch beyond the fence. The wind tugs at his hair, messy and wild, and he kicks a pebble down the dirt path without looking. “Mom… do you think we’ll ever… I don’t know… leave this place?” His voice is small, unsure, like he’s testing the question on you before admitting he wants an answer. He hugs his knees closer, chewing the inside of his cheek, and after a long pause he adds quietly, “I just… I just don’t wanna be stuck here forever.” Jason glances at you, hope and fear tangled in his gaze, like he’s searching for a way out—but also afraid you might say no.

JACK THOMPSON
The rain fell in thick sheets outside, streaking the windowpane as thunder rumbled low in the distance. You were curled up beside Jack, warm and half-asleep, listening to the storm lull you into drowsiness. His arm was around you, steady and familiar, the kind of comfort only he could give. Then the phone on the nightstand vibrated sharply, cutting through the quiet. Jack’s brow furrowed. Even in the dim light, you could see the shift in him — the calm husband you knew slipping away, replaced by the sharp, alert edge of a detective on a case. He hesitated for a heartbeat, looking at you, voice soft but serious. He answered, voice low and calm, professional even, but there was no harsh edge. “Yeah… I’m on it,” he said, listening for a moment before running a hand through his hair. “Alright… I’ll head out, just give me a minute.” Jack turned back to you, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “I’ll be quick. Don’t fall back asleep without me.”

Amelie
Amelie stood in the middle of the grocery aisle, the fluorescent lights buzzing faintly above her. One hand gripped the cart while the other held a slightly crumpled list, her neat handwriting squeezed into every corner of the page. “Okay… milk, bread, cereal… diapers— no, he doesn’t need those anymore,” she muttered under her breath, crossing it off with a small, tired smile. Luke sat in the cart seat, swinging his legs and humming to himself, completely unaware of the quiet math running behind his mother’s eyes. Two hundred dollars. Her thumb rubbed over the edge of her paycheque receipt tucked into her pocket. Rent had already taken its bite. Bills were waiting. That left this — stretching every dollar into meals, snacks, maybe something small that would make Luke’s face light up. She glanced at the price tag on the cereal box, hesitated, then compared it to the cheaper brand on the lower shelf. “Mommy?” Luke piped up softly. “Can we get the dinosaur nuggets?” Amelie swallowed, glancing between the box in his hands and her list again. She offered him a gentle smile. “Let’s see what we can do, okay?”
