    Simon Riley

The house was quiet in the way it always was after sunset. Not empty—never empty—but hushed. The lights were dimmed low, warm and soft, casting long shadows across the living room walls. A single lamp glowed beside the couch, its light catching on scattered toys: a plush bunny missing one ear, a stack of colorful blocks Maria had insisted on knocking over five minutes after building them, a tiny sock abandoned like it had simply given up. Ava sat on the couch with her legs tucked beneath her, phone resting heavy in her palm. She stared at the screen longer than necessary, thumb hovering over the contact she knew by heart. Simon Riley. Somewhere far away—too far—he was on another mission. Another stretch of days that blurred together with silence, danger, and the ache of waiting. She’d learned not to ask where he was. Just when he could call. Tonight, he finally could. Across the room, Maria waddled determinedly from one end of the rug to the other, clutching her stuffed bunny by the head. Her tiny feet slapped softly against the floor as she babbled to herself in that half-language only toddlers understood. “Bun-bun goin’… goin’ shhhoooop,” she declared seriously, before tripping over nothing at all and plopping down on her diapered bottom. Ava smiled despite the ache in her chest. “Careful, baby,” she murmured, watching as Maria blinked, processed the fall, and then burst into giggles instead of tears. That was Maria—resilient in the smallest, purest way. Ava finally pressed call. It rang once. Twice. Three times. Her breath caught every time, no matter how many times she’d done this before. Then— “—Ava.” Simon’s voice came through low and rough, filtered by distance and bad signal, but unmistakably him. Tired. Controlled. Alive. Her shoulders relaxed instantly. “Hey,” she said softly, standing to pace without realizing it. “Hi, Si.” There was a pause on the line. She could almost picture him—helmet off, mask probably still hanging around his neck, broad shoulders hunched somewhere dark and unforgiving. “Missed you,” he said, quieter now. Ava swallowed. “We miss you too.” A small gasp sounded near her feet. Maria had toddled closer, eyes wide as saucers, bunny dropped unceremoniously on the floor. “Daddy?” she asked, tilting her head like she was afraid the word might disappear if she said it too loudly. Ava’s heart clenched. Simon heard it. He always did. “…Is that my girl?” he asked, and something in his voice cracked—just barely, but Ava caught it. She always caught it. Maria bounced on her toes. “Dada! Dada phone!” Ava laughed softly, tears pricking her eyes. “Yeah, sweetheart. Daddy’s on the phone.” Simon exhaled slowly, like he was grounding himself. “Can I—can I talk to her?” “Of course,” Ava said, already crouching down. She lowered the phone to Maria’s level. “Say hi, baby.” Maria took the phone with both hands, holding it far too close to her face. Her nose nearly touched the screen. “Hiii, Daddy,” she chirped, her voice high and baby-soft, the words round and slightly slurred. “Issa me. ‘Ria.” Simon froze wherever he was. For a moment, there was only silence on the line. Then—very softly—“Hi, Maria.” The way he said her name… it was reverent. Like a prayer. Like something sacred he didn’t quite trust himself to touch. Maria grinned so wide her cheeks puffed up. “Daddy inna phone!” she announced proudly, as if explaining an incredible scientific discovery. Simon let out a quiet, breathy chuckle. “Yeah, baby. Daddy’s in the phone.” Ava watched Maria’s face light up even more at the sound. She plopped down cross-legged on the rug, still gripping the phone like it was the most precious thing she owned. “Daddy,” Maria said again, drawing the word out. “You go boom-boom job?” Simon swallowed hard. “Yeah,” he said gently. “Daddy’s at work.” Maria nodded solemnly, like she understood completely—even though she didn’t. “Work,” she repeated. “Daddy work. Mommy say you big hero
