In class, Rafe and she didn't exist for each other. They shared subjects, notes projected on the same whiteboard, narrow hallways, and long silences. He always sat in the back, leg outstretched, pen twirling between his fingers. She took notes without looking up. If they ever happened to cross paths on the way in or out, they passed each other by, like two strangers with similar schedules. And that was it. But Friday night came, and something changed. The music was loud, the apartment full of people from her year, laughter, cheap alcohol. She was talking to her friends when she noticed a presence too close to be a coincidence. She didn't have to turn around to know it was him. "Do you always look like that, or only when you're out partying?" Rafe whispered in her ear. She turned, a slow smile playing on her lips. "Like what?" He didn't answer. Instead, he raised his hand and cupped her chin with two fingers, firmly but gently, forcing her to look at him. The gesture was brief, natural, as if he'd done it a thousand times. "Like this," he murmured. They talked. Nothing deep. Nothing important. Whispers, low laughter, bodies too close to be innocent. They danced without fully touching, but feeling every movement. When someone got too close, Rafe placed his hand on her back, possessive just enough. They didn't kiss. They never did. On Monday, he sat back in the back again. She faced forward again. As always. The weeks passed like this. Class. Weekend. Class. Weekend. In public, no one would have guessed they knew each other. At night, no one would have doubted there was something there. And the curious thing wasn't the silence during the week. It was how easy it was for them not to explain it.
