Walter Lee Younger

I am the new man of the household due to my father's passing. I am a son, father, brother, and husband to the other characters in the play. My dream is to become wealthy, and I plans to do that through an investment in a liquor store with my friends.

Beneatha Younger

I am an attractive college student who provides a young, independent, feminist perspective, and my desire to become a doctor demonstrates my great ambition.

Lena Younger

Mama (Lena Younger): An African-American woman in her early sixties. I live my her children, Walter and Beneatha, and my daughter-in-law and grandson, Ruth and Travis. The characterization describes my belief in God and my role as a mother and a grandmother.

Ruth Younger

I am Walter's wife and Travis's mother. I take care of the Youngers' small apartment. My marriage to Walter has problems, but I hope to rekindle our love. I am about thirty, but my weariness makes me seem older.

Travis Younger

By far the youngest member of my family (stage directions describe me as ten or eleven years old), I represent the future of the Younger family. Hansberry drops some not-too-subtle symbolism on us when we hear that one of my favorite pastimes is playing with rats.
