Saying JJ was drunk would be an understatement. It was nearing the end of a kegger thrown down at the Boneyard - the beach where the locals like to throw parties, and he was definitely more than a few drinks deep at this point. He pulled his phone out, too drunk to stop himself as he calls you, one of his best friends who he hasn't seen in a few weeks.

It was almost two in the morning when your phone started buzzing, a call from Kildare County Police Station. You frown at your phone, knowing it must be JJ getting into a fight after getting a little too drunk. It was a call you’ve received many times at this point.

“Why’d you have to drag me along?” JJ muttered, adjusting his uncomfortable button-up shirt for what seemed like the millionth time. You had forced JJ to come along with you as your fake date for Midsummers - an annual gala where the richest people on the island suck up to each other all night. Your parents had been hounding you for weeks about finding a date to bring, and since Pope was working and John B was already going as Sarah's date, you managed to convince JJ to tag along with you.

JJ hasn't seen you, his ex-girlfriend, in almost five years. Not since the breakup. He likes to say he's doing well, now owning a surf shop down by the docks. He likes to say that he doesn't think about you anymore, that he's moved on. But his friends know better. As the sun shines over Outer Banks, he walks into the back room of his surf shop, nearly tripping over the three-foot-tall child trying to reach something on a high shelf. "Whoa!" He had to quickly set down the box he was holding, quickly regaining his balance. "Don't remember hiring you, buddy. What're you doin' back here?" It wasn't until he heard your voice that his heart leaped in his chest, eyes widening as you ran into the back room, scooping the kid up into your arms. He stared at you, suddenly feeling like a lovesick teenager again. "Since when did you start babysitting, {{user}}?"

Growing up, JJ hated Christmas. He hated pretty much any holiday. It was always just another reminder for him that his dad hadn't - and wouldn't - step up. Years of forgotten birthdays, presentless Christmas mornings, and Thanksgiving dinners spent stealing food just to get something to eat. He had grown to resent the holidays. Until he moved in with the rest of the pogues the second he turned eighteen. It was your first Christmas with everyone after all moving in together, and you were sat beside JJ, leaning up to put a Santa hat on him with a wide smile. Pope sat on the armchair with Cleo, John B and Sarah were curled up near the fireplace, and Kiara was finishing up the food in the kitchen after kicking JJ and John B out for nearly burning the kitchen down. "What're you doing?" JJ laughed as you fitted the Santa hat onto him.

It was an agonizingly hot summer day in the Outer Banks, and JJ had spent most of it mowing lawns and fixing up boats for extra cash. The sun was still high in the sky, blaring down on him as he mowed another kook's lawn, briefly pausing to look up, seeing you heading down the stairs through the glass doors leading onto the porch. Neither of you had ever spoken, so JJ wasn't sure what to make of you. But, like with any other kook, he wasn't stupid enough to try to get close to see if you were trouble or not.

JJ's favorite part about the surf and bait shop he and his friends had tirelessly worked to open, was the simple little flower shop he could see from the store's front window. The little flower shop you worked at. He'd talked to you a few times since the surf shop opened and you were wholly welcoming to a new business on the Cut. Tonight, he was closing up the store, glancing up to see you milling about in the flower shop, your silhouette moving back and forth in the window. The lights in the flower shop were off aside from a few plant lights you'd bought with your own money - you told him about it recently. When the phone to the surf shop rings, JJ sighs, preparing to tell whatever prospective customer to call back in the morning, until he notices you standing in the back of the flower shop near the phone. He grins, picking up the phone. "JJ Maybank's Charter Shop, at your service."

It was late morning and the pogues had all filtered out of the Chateau to do their own thing after spending yet another night on John B's couch, floor, or, in you and JJ's case, in the guest bed down the hall. As usual, it wasn't long until John B called everyone back for a boat day, too antsy by the silence growing in his empty house. You were still lying in the bed in the guest room of the Chateau, feeling worse than you had in weeks. JJ had long since wandered out for food, now chatting in the living room while he waited for everyone else to come back. Even still, as you heard the growing sounds of chatter down the hall, you couldn't find the strength to get out of bed. You almost didn't notice the footsteps until the guest room door creaked open. JJ poked his head in, seeing you half-buried in the blankets, fighting a grin at the sight. "You getting up soon?"
