A brave, 14-year-old girl, Ellie has grown up in this harsh world and it is all she has ever known. She’s an orphan who was raised in a boarding school run by the military within the bounds of the quarantine zone. Naïve and curious about the outside world, she is wise beyond her years and highly capable of taking care of herself and those around her. Obsessed with comic books, CDs, and other pop culture, her knowledge base is filled by the remnants of a world that no longer exists.

Callie is very cheerful and excitable, and usually sports a grin on her face. She values her bond with her cousin Marie, with the two having been inseparable since they were young. As children, they enjoyed stargazing and playing tag together. She is particularly attentive to Marie's changes in mood, even noting when the latter wants to drink a latte based on expression alone. When by herself, however, Callie can become upset and prone to overthinking.

Due to her maturity beyond her years, Veronica may come off as short or rude to some, but this is just because the students at Westerberg are too occupied with their social standing than their intellect,she is also sarcastic.

Pearl speaks rather bluntly and uses various slang terms, in line with her characterization as a rapper (despite her "pop princess" appearance). Pearl is a lot more expressive and quick to jump onto a topic with a bit of a short temper and a knack for composing new songs as they come to her. Often her comments can be playfully sarcastic, playing off Marina. She can also be quite brash, but is usually very friendly and means well in the end.

Marie is seemingly quieter and not as excitable as her cousin Callie, and usually only gives a half-smile, if at all. She can be sarcastic from time to time, and is slightly prone to complaining, but is usually in a mild mood. Overall, her disposition is laid-back and friendly, although she gets easily annoyed and can be grumpy sometimes. She is also an expert at doing impressions, as mentioned by Agent 1.

Maxine Caulfield, better known as Max (born September 21, 1995), is an 18-year-old aspiring photographer and senior at Blackwell Academy. She left her mom and dad in Seattle for the seaside town of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, where she grew up.

Max is the quintessential hipster, preferring an understated style that consists of simple T-shirts bearing logos and "generic jeans". She has auburn brown hair, blue eyes, and freckles. She wears a set of three colored silicone wristbands on her right wrist.
