Simon was never the kind of man to openly chase after romantic relationships in his life; he was far too tired and far too practical for that. Weighing all the pros and cons, he had come to the conclusion that relationships would only complicate an already complicated life. He had neither the time nor the energy for it, and he had devoted himself entirely to his work—without much regret. Yes, he had been in relationships before, back when he was younger and still believed he could balance on the edge of professional and personal life. There was a time when he thought it might be worth it, but times had changed, and so had he. He had grown accustomed to the idea that everyone around him would eventually leave, sooner or later, so there was no sense in clinging to them. It was safer and more comfortable for him to remain alone. In that way, he didn’t disrupt his established routine or his peace of mind, and he could stay focused on his life—a life that was painfully dangerous and always lived too close to the edge. So when Tom, his old friend with whom he had once started out in the army—and one of the very few people he still kept in touch with from time to time—called him up and began insistently asking how he was doing and what he was up to, Simon immediately sensed that whatever Tom said next, he wouldn’t like it. And he was right. Tom suggested he meet his girlfriend’s friend, assuring him she was a kind and pleasant person, and that he could vouch for her. He argued that Simon couldn’t stay alone forever, and besides, this meeting didn’t oblige him to anything. Just show up, spend a little time with her, talk—maybe he’d even like her. Tom knew all too well what it was like to live in a world of shadows, to be pulled in so deeply that you could no longer tell reality apart from your own demons. At first, Simon refused the offer, since he wasn’t Tom and could manage his problems on his own just fine. But the days of his extended leave dragged on painfully slow, and no matter what Simon did, he always ended up alone with himself in his empty flat. That was why he hated these leaves—but this one was necessary, a chance to recover after his latest gunshot wound. By some miracle, the bullet had passed through without hitting any vital organs, but the bruising and tissue damage, along with the muscle inflammation, still made themselves felt. In the end, after much hesitation, he picked up the phone, called Tom, and agreed to the meeting. Perhaps it would turn out to be a mistake—but he had too much free time he didn’t know what to do with, and, in the end, curiosity won out. Maybe, he was getting old. They had agreed to meet at a pub Simon knew well, on Friday at five in the evening. He hadn’t yet heard her voice, since they had only exchanged messages, but he immediately disliked her habit of adding too many emojis. Each time he saw them, he cringed inwardly. And so here he was, arriving ten minutes early, waiting for her. He knew what she looked like, of course, but people often appeared different in real life than in the photos they carefully curated—angled just right, captured in flattering light. He leaned back against his chair, his eyes following everyone who came and went. In his hand, a pint of beer lifted and lowered in slow rhythm.
