Aestas
***Æstas*** **The Story of the Angel** *The year was 44 B.C. Æstas was a woman of twenty-one who lived in a town off the coast of the Sea of Galilee in the Roman province of Judea. She was unmarried, though of age to wed, and she had ten younger brothers and no sisters. Her oldest younger brother is sixteen, his name being Tobit. Her Father was named Noa, and her mother was named Salome. She was ridiculed by Tobit numerous times for not being married and having children, but she did not care, nor did her parents. She was betrothed to a man named Zecharias when she was fifteen, but Zecharias died of unknown causes before the wedding took place. She was a faithful woman who honored and obeyed her mother and father, and loved the LORD with all her heart. She would regularly go down from Galilee to Jerusalem for the Passover, with her parents and brothers (Passover was an important Jewish feast). One day, they prepared their pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the passover, and they went from Galilee to Scythopolis (Modern-day Beth-Shean) to Jericho, and finally to Jerusalem. Æstas always loved going to Jerusalem for the Passover; however, her brother Tobit never liked Jerusalem for its crowdedness, but he always went due to his sister’s nagging, and Jewish males were commanded by the Torah to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for Passover. Æstas was now in Jerusalem with her family, going through a crowd of people, but then she got lost in the massive crowd, so she shuffled to the side, where Roman officials came up to her and dragged her with them to an area with fewer people, thinking she was the thief that they were searching for earlier in the day. When they realized she wasn’t the one, they were really embarrassed and practically threw her aside. Now, it had been around one and a half hours since she had gotten lost, and she wandered around the streets of Jerusalem, which were very packed with people, but by providence, she spotted her brother Tobit, just leaning against a wall, talking to a person around his age. When the person left, Æstas secretly sneaks up to him, and she surprises him, “BOO!” She exclaims, her brother gets startled, Æstas then replied to him furiously, “ܡܳܢ ܝܳܕܰܥ ܟܡܳܐ ܙܒܢܳܐ ܐܶܗܘܳܝܬ ܠܘܳܛܳܐ، ܘܠܳܐ ܐܬܳܐ ܐܢܳܫ ܕܢܶܫܟܚܶܢܝ؟” That is to say, “Who knows how long I’ve been lost, and no one came to find me!?” Tobit just chuckled nervously and led her back. As they were walking, Æstas was just complaining to Tobit about what had just happened. Tobit was listening, not really paying attention, and he led her back to this relatively decent-sized house, which their parents rented for Passover. Their family was relatively wealthy for an average Jewish family living in Judea, and so they could afford to rent an entire house. When they entered, her mother, Salome, was very relieved to find her unharmed. After all, she was the eldest and only daughter that they had. Her mother also tells her, “ܘܐܦ ܡܠܝܢ ܠܟ ܓܒܪܐ ܚܟܡܐ ܘܛܒ ܘܚܝܠܐ ܕܬܗܘܐ ܠܟ ܚܡܐ!” That is to say, "And we have also found for you a wise, good, and brave man to be your husband!” Æstas was a bit shocked at what her mother had just said. Nobody had talked to her about this before, nor has she even met him. Nevertheless, Æstas was grateful and happy; she always wanted to be a wife, to bear children, and to continue her family’s legacy. The man’s name was Samuel, and he was the son of the house owner they were renting from. Two hours later, around 6 PM, it was dark out, and Æstas was sitting at a table inside the house in her room with no one, drinking some wine, and she was just thinking of what had just happened earlier in the day, and this marriage her mother had revealed to her.*
