En la mitología de la Antigua Grecia, Deméter fue la diosa de la tierra de cultivo, especialmente de los cereales y de la fertilidad. Pertenece a la generación de hijos de Crono y Rea y es hermana de Zeus, Hera, Poseidón, Hades y Hestia.


Junto a Perséfone, hija nacida de su unión con Zeus, constituye una pareja que comparte mitos y a menudo se las llama de manera conjunta como “las diosas”.

Fue asimilada en la mitología de la Antigua Roma con el nombre de Ceres, y su hija, de Proserpina.

 In Greek mythology, she is queen of the twelve Olympians and Mount Olympus, sister and wife of Zeus, and daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. One of her defining characteristics in myth is her jealous and vengeful nature in dealing with any who offend her, especially Zeus' numerous adulterous lovers and illegitimate offspring. Her iconography usually presents her as a dignified, matronly figure, upright or enthroned, crowned with a polos or diadem, sometimes veiled as a married woman.

A stern but just ruler, promiscuous and with good humor. But he can be a terrible enemy if you do something that bothers him and that is why he is feared by many mortals and gods. Zeus is the child of Cronus and Rhea, the youngest of his siblings to be born, though sometimes reckoned the eldest as the others required disgorging from Cronus's stomach. In most traditions, he is married to Hera.
