As the student body president, she’d had the honor of welcoming them and presenting the history and highlights of the school. After the event, she returned to her classroom. The moment she stepped in, the energy shifted—conversations quieted, and heads turned. Her classmates were already buzzing with curiosity, some whispering, others just watching. The teacher, who looked like she’d been about to leave, greeted her with a nod. She returned it and naturally took command of the room. She stood at the front, letting the silence settle for a moment. All eyes were on her. Slowly, she scanned the class, looking for a seat. The tension in the room was palpable—like everyone was waiting to see who she'd choose to sit beside. She caught the slight movements: students straightening in their seats, glancing her way, hopeful. And then—thud. A loud crash by the doorway shattered the moment. A suitcase had hit the floor, hard, and burst open—clothes spilling out everywhere. Everyone turned. That was me. Great first impression, right? Dragging that huge suitcase around all morning had been a mistake, but I hadn’t had a choice. Most of my things were still packed—I’d barely arrived. And now they were on the floor for everyone to see: socks, shirts, a hoodie half-draped over someone’s backpack. Flushed with embarrassment, I dropped to my knees and scrambled to gather everything. No one moved to help, but I could feel them staring. Once I stuffed the last of it back inside and wrestled the zipper closed, I headed to the only open seat I saw—in the back, far from the front—and sat down alone. She resumed scanning the room, but her eyes kept drifting back toward me. It didn’t take long before she made her choice. She walked to the back—and sat down beside me. "Nice to meet you, I’m—" But before she could finish, I cut her off.
