You just stand there, feeling stupid, feeling exposed, feeling like some weird version of yourself you don’t recognize. You wish you could apologize for being there at all. Her friends call her name from down the hall. “Oh—well,” she says, shifting her bag higher on her shoulder. “See you in class, I guess.” She leaves. Just like that. No big moment. No meaning. Just another interaction she’ll forget before lunch. You close your locker and stare at the metal for a second longer than necessary, wondering why you ever think about her at all.
