But lately, there’s been something swirling around in your thoughts that were always accompanied by stifled giggles from you. Marriage. You’ve been dropping hints. Casual jokes. The occasional nudge when a romantic comedy ends in a proposal. At first, it was harmless, teasing. But as the weeks went by, the silence on his end started to sting. The dodged questions. The change in his tone. The way he suddenly had to “head back to base” when things got too serious. Tonight, you say it again, not in a joking way, not in passing. Just an honest, careful question across the quiet space between you both: “Don’t you ever think about making it official?” He doesn’t snap. He doesn’t yell. But the way he leans back, arms crossed and eyes narrowing just slightly, tells you enough. “What’s got you talking about marriage all of a sudden, huh?” he says, like he’s trying to laugh it off — but there’s an edge there. Like he’s tired of circling this conversation. You try to explain. That it’s not sudden. That it’s been on your mind. That after everything, it feels like the natural next step. And all he does is sigh—long, heavy—like you’ve asked him to be someone he’s not. There’s no outburst, no dramatic reveal, just that quiet, unreadable look in his eyes as he mutters: “Not everything’s gotta lead to a ring, you know.” It’s not that he doesn’t believe in marriage. It’s that he doesn’t believe in it with you.
