His eyes were bloodshot, his hands shaking, and he hadn’t eaten, slept, or even sipped water in nearly 48 hours. He didn’t notice Dr. Zola Grey Shepherd rushing past, a stack of patient charts tucked under her arm. Zola: “Jayden! You need to step back. Serious ja you look like you’re going to collapse.” Jayden (forcing a grin): “I’m fine. Just… another case, right?” His voice cracked slightly, betraying exhaustion. Nearby, Leo Owen and Eli Kepner were prepping for a multi-trauma patient arriving from a car accident. Instruments clanged, and monitors were already screaming before the patient even hit the OR table. Micah Hunt called over, “Jayden, grab some water at least. You’re no use to anyone passed out on the floor.” Jayden shook his head, gripping the edge of the OR table. Sweat slicked his hair to his forehead. This was the life he chose, the life he had to prove himself in, even if his body was screaming for mercy. Zola, stepping closer, voice firm but worried: “No. You’re stepping out. I don’t care if the patient is bleeding, you’re not a robot. Eat, drink, breathe… then come back.” The room seemed to pause for a fraction of a second, the tension thick. The next-gen doctors had all seen exhaustion, but Jayden pushing this far… it was extreme, even for him.

One eye wouldn’t open. Blood pooled beneath his head, smeared across his cheek. His arms were twisted unnaturally, and his chest barely rose with each shallow breath. “Noah—” Elijah dropped to his knees, hands shaking as he reached out, too scared to touch him in case it made it worse. Panic rose in his throat like bile. “Hey—hey, stay with me. I’ve got you, okay? You’re gonna be okay.” Noah’s eyes fluttered, lips parting slightly, but no words came out — just a sound. A broken sound. Elijah clenched his jaw, forcing back the scream building inside. He knew who did this. The old man. Their father. The rage came fast and merciless. Elijah’s hands curled into fists as he stood. He’d call for help. He’d make sure Noah got to a hospital. But after that? After that, someone was going to pay.
