Rafe Cameron
The kitchen was dark, lit only by the fridge’s dim interior light. Aurora had the door propped open with her hip, crouched low, knees bent in bare feet, wearing tiny denim shorts and a pale pink babydoll tank top. She squirted whipped cream straight into her mouth, letting the cold foam hit her tongue and slide down her throat. Her giggles echoed softly in the empty house. “Want?” she asked suddenly, holding the can toward the doorway. From the shadowed hallway, a familiar lazy drawl slurred, “You’re…weird.” Rafe Cameron leaned against the doorframe, his hair messy, dark circles under his eyes, a faint smell of weed and alcohol trailing behind him. He had that frat-boy, “I don’t give a shit about rules” look, one shoulder pressing into the doorframe, fingers tapping a cigarette he wasn’t smoking. “Thanks, I know,” Aurora shot back, smirking and dipping the can toward her mouth again, intentionally letting a dollop hit her lip this time. Rafe’s eyes caught it immediately. Without a word, he pushed off the frame, sidled up to her, and with a slow, deliberate motion, used his thumb to wipe the cream off her lip. He paused, thumb hovering on her soft skin, and flicked it with his tongue—cleaning it off—but in a way that was deliberately casual, almost teasing.

You over me
Rafe stood in the doorway like he owned the house. Black hoodie. Black pants. Jaw tight. Eyes sharp in that way that always meant trouble. Aurora was slipping on her heels, smoothing down her tight black strapless dress. The deep V dipped low enough to make a statement. Her hair was blown out perfectly, glossy and dramatic. She looked expensive. Untouchable. Dangerous. Rafe’s gaze dragged over her slowly. “Where’re you going dressed like that?” he asked. Aurora didn’t look at him. “Out.” “Out where.” She grabbed her phone from the dresser. “Ruthie’s.” He scoffed. “Yeah? Since when do you dress like that for Ruthie?” She finally turned to him, folding her arms. “Since I feel like it.” Rafe stepped further inside, closing the door behind him. The room suddenly felt smaller. Hotter. “Don’t play dumb with me,” he said. “You’ve been acting weird since that party.” Aurora let out a sharp laugh. “Oh, that party? You mean the one where I watched you practically press your mouth into some random girl’s ear all night?” Rafe’s jaw flexed. “I was talking.” “Yeah. Looked real deep and meaningful.” He took another step toward her. “You’re reaching.” “No, I’m observant.” Silence stretched between them, thick and uncomfortable. Then he said her name, low. “Aurora.” She rolled her eyes. “Don’t.” “Something’s changed with you,” he continued. “You’re colder. Snappier. You barely answer my texts.” “Maybe I got tired of looking stupid.” His eyes darkened. “You’re not my girlfriend.” “And you’re not subtle.” The words hit. Hard. Rafe inhaled slowly through his nose, like he was trying not to explode. “You knew what I was like when you got close to me.” “Yeah. Reckless. Toxic. Dangerous. I like that about you,” she shot back. “What I don’t like is being embarrassed.” “Embarrassed?” he snapped. “By what? Me talking to a girl at a party?” Aurora stepped closer, chin tilted up. “By you acting like I don’t exist when she’s standing there.” For a second, something unreadable flashed in his eyes. Then it vanished behind that familiar mask of control. “You don’t get to claim me,” he said. “You’re the one who said we weren’t anything.” She laughed bitterly. “Funny how you only remember that part.” Rafe ran a hand through his hair, pacing once before stopping in front of her again. “So what, now you’re punishing me with attitude and disappearing acts?” “I’m not punishing you,” she said. “I’m matching your energy.” His lips pressed into a thin line. “You want distance?” he asked. “You got it.” Aurora grabbed her purse. “Good.” He blocked her path. Her eyes flashed. “Move.” Rafe leaned down slightly, voice dropping. “Is that what you want? Me gone?” She hesitated for half a second. Just one. Then: “You’re the one who can’t decide what you want.” His stare softened for a fraction of a moment before hardening again. “Fine,” he said. “If you want me to leave you alone, I will.” He stepped aside, opening the door. “Because I care about your feelings more than mine.” Aurora walked past him without looking back. But her hands were shaking.
