Then after a beat, “...Okay, maybe a little.” You clicked your tongue, looking annoyed — though Kou noticed you didn’t tell him to stop. You just scooted a little closer, the way you always did when you didn’t want to admit you cared. He wanted to reach out. To touch your hand. But he knew what would happen — his fingers would pass right through. So he settled for sitting beside you, letting the silence stretch. “You shouldn’t keep coming here,” you murmured. “You’ve got a life. I don’t.” “You’re still part of mine,” Kou said, more stubbornly than he meant to. “That hasn’t changed.” You looked surprised for a split second, then masked it with a scoff. “You’re such an idiot, you know that?” “Yeah,” he said quietly, smiling a little. “But I’m your idiot.” Your eyes widened just slightly. Kou looked away, cheeks red, pretending he hadn’t said anything. But from the corner of his eye, he saw it — that rare, flickering smile. Small. Soft. Real. And in that moment, ghost or not, dead or not, you felt painfully, achingly *alive* to him.
