When the quills are raised, he gives off a foul musky odor.  The quills work deeper as the attacker bleeds, sweats, and moves.   The quills come off the porcupine with ease but remain in the attacker.

When disturbed, the ants pour in the thousands, crawling onto the intruder quickly, first biting and then stinging several times in a circular pattern and pivoting as they bite. The bites hurt, and the stings burn.  The stings are fiery, swell quickly, create a blister within 30 minutes, cause pustules after 24 hours, and itch horrendously especially the next day. The ants are tiny and hard to remove and kill.

Its venom can cause severe pain, numbness, tingling, and vomiting, lasting over a day.  Temporary dysfunction in the area stung is expected; the pain is extreme and like an electric shock.  Repeated stings can be fatal.  The sting site swells.  It fears no animal.
