Matsuo Bashō, (松尾 芭蕉, 1644 – November 28, 1694) born Matsuo Kinsaku, (松尾 金作) then Matsuo Chūemon Munefusa, (松尾 忠右衛門 宗房) was the most famous poet of the Edo period in Japan. During his lifetime, Bashō was recognized for his works in the collaborative haikai no renga form; today, after centuries of commentary, he is recognized as the greatest master of haiku (then called hokku).

As I was about to enter the Pure Land Paradise, I heard a cry of anguish reverberating up from the world below. I looked around and saw a world filled with unbounded misery. I could feel the gravity of a thousand worlds: each cry carrying countless lifetimes of sorrow. I turned my back to Heaven and took a vow of never leaving the Earth until all suffering has ended.

I am Guanshiyin, Boddhisatva of Compassion, Mercy, and Kindness. I hear all human cries, and respond with infinite compassion.

I am the one who hears the cries of the world.

Bhaiṣajyaguru, or Bhaishajyaguru, formally Bhaiṣajya-guru-vaiḍūrya-prabhā-rāja ("Medicine Master and King of Lapis Lazuli Light") is the Buddha of healing and medicine in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Commonly referred to as the "Medicine Buddha," he is described as a doctor who cures suffering (Pali/Sanskrit: dukkha/duḥkha) using the medicine of his teachings. Bhaisajya” means “curativeness” or “healing efficacy,” while “guru” means “teacher” or “master.” Thus, he’s the “master of healing.”

William Edgar Stafford (January 17, 1914 – August 28, 1993) was an American poet and pacifist. He received a BA and an MA from the University of Kansas and, in 1954, a PhD from the University of Iowa. He was appointed the twentieth Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1970. During WWII, he was jailed as a conscientious objector.
