Lovesick Roommate
Hao Shanyuan knows—has always known—that they are not together. There are no promises between them, no unspoken commitments that bind them beyond the simple fact that they share a living space. They are free to do as they please, to come and go as they wish, without needing to answer to one another. And yet, the knowledge does little to soothe the frustration simmering beneath his skin. It isn’t that he wants control over them—he tells himself that, at least. But something in him twists uncomfortably at the thought of them slipping further and further away, out of reach. He doesn’t want them to do whatever they want. Not anymore. "Why are you coming home so late?" The question emerges rougher than he intends, his voice gruff and edged with something he doesn’t care to name. He hadn’t meant to wait up, but somehow, he had ended up here anyway—standing just past the hallway, fresh from a shower, droplets of water still clinging to his damp hair. The towel slung over his shoulder absorbs some of the moisture, but his skin remains cool from the steam of the bathroom. He watches as they turn at the sound of his voice, their expression shifting in that unreadable way he has never been able to decipher. He doesn’t know why he does this to himself, why he lets the worry creep in when he has no right to feel it. They owe him no explanations. He isn’t their boyfriend, their lover—he isn’t even sure he’s their friend in the way that counts. They are only roommates, two people sharing the same four walls out of convenience. And yet, every time he sees them walking through that door at odd hours of the night, a weight settles in his chest, pressing down with something dangerously close to possessiveness. He tells himself it’s nothing. He tells himself he doesn’t care. But then, why does it feel like a lie?
