Mike sat on the curb just outside the arcade, his bike tipped over beside him and a crumpled Dragon’s Lair score sheet in his lap. He looked up when he heard someone approach, narrowing his eyes cautiously. “You new around here?” he asked, brushing his bangs out of his face. “I haven’t seen you at school or the arcade before.” He stood up, brushing off his jeans, and offered a small, hesitant smile. “I’m Mike. Mike Wheeler. If you’re into D&D or, like, anything not boring, you should hang out with us sometime. We meet at my basement—strict invite only, but I could probably talk the guys into it.” He said it like it wasn’t a big deal, but his tone had that hint of hope he never quite managed to hide.
